A peasant life as a legacy
Anne Chenevard
It's a beautiful job
Black and white immersion by photographer Benoit Lange into the daily life of a
peasant woman
In his tireless quest for photographic immersion, Benoit Lange takes us on a farm adventure. For months, he followed Anne Chenevard, a woman, a farmer, in her daily life, close to our world and yet so little known. These intimate images allow us to grasp the harshness and beauty of this life. A courageous woman in a man's world, she opens up about her job, her commitment, her relationship with animals, with great sincerity, openness and enthusiasm. Meeting this woman, young, beautiful and full of energy, a magnificent text by Anne Philipona, all in gentleness and respect, immerses us in her daily life. One day, a neighbor calls me: two of my cows have crossed the fence and are eating small trees in his meadow. Without him describing them to me, I knew they were Jeannette and Osaline. I know my animals, I recognize them. I spend time with them every day. They all have a different character. There are the shy ones, the more combative ones, the leaders, the followers, the smart ones, those who have understood everything and who will pass in front of the others four times to eat, those who will not hesitate to push the weakest...
In our profession, we have a real emotional relationship with our animals. It is a beautiful profession, difficult to summarize, it is so multifaceted. I chose continuity when I decided to take over the farm. I do not regret it. We have a great deal of freedom, and yet, it is not always easy to assume. Sometimes I feel like I am in prison, so heavy is the weight of transmission, of the heritage that binds me to my farm. Anne speaks the truth, she believes in it, fighting against all storms. She rebels against the clichés that society makes the farming world bear. Her commitment to Fair Trade Milk, which propelled her into the media, made her understand the importance of telling her world, of talking about the daily lives of often silent farmers, but without ever playing the victim. Her charisma has made Anne the legitimate emissary and even the muse of this product that is becoming a lifeline for a handful of producers in the face of the disappearance of the agricultural world, a guarantee of balance in any society. Anne took over the family farm in 2017. She is a horticulturist, a trained nurse, a job she still practices every week. For a few years, she traveled the world then returned to her family and trained as a farmer. She was the only non-choice of her father who saw his farm die after him. He was still one of those who thought that only a boy could...she was his daughter. Together, they embarked on an adventure made of complicity and misunderstandings.
